Three Sentenced In Fatal Swatting Attack – eCrimeBytes Nibble #8

This case has it all: gamers, wagers, and swatting.

Unfortunately, it also ended someone’s life.

What started as a $1.50 wager on Call Of Duty turned into an innocent father of two’s last night:

The indictment says Shane M. Gaskill, a 19-year-old Wichita, Kansas resident, and Casey S. Viner, 18, had a falling out over a $1.50 game wager.

Viner allegedly wanted to get back at Gaskill, and so enlisted the help of another man — Tyler R. Barriss — a serial swatter known by the alias “SWAuTistic” who’d bragged of “swatting” hundreds of schools and dozens of private residences.

Gaskill provided Viner an address where he no longer lived. When Viner called in the SWAT (fake emergency) at Gaskill’s purported residence, an innocent father of two who currently lived there was shot and killed by police.

Law enforcement eventually catches up with the three men and charged them for their crimes.

Barriss plead guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Viner plead guilty and was sentenced to 15 months in prison.

Gaskill was originally given probation but when he violated it he was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
