In 2020 there were 8 arrests in a Sturgis sex crime sting. Cody Wayne Hopkins was one of those arrests. According to HSI, Hopkins started chatting with a 14 year old girl, who was thankfully a special agent.
Conversations were creepy. For example, one that was tame consisted of:
"Cody" inquired, "Have you ever dated someone my age?" SA Propes replied,"Does me being 13years old bother you? I hope not you seem super chill and cool. I've never dated an older guy because my mom would probably freak out if she found out, but I did play around a couple times. They were all pretty nice to me (emoji smiling, winking, and kissing)." "Cody" stated, "No, it doesn't bother me. As long as it stays between me and you. At least til your [sic] old enough."Hopkins also liked brag to the child he wanted to rape about how “big” and manly he is.
On August 8, 2020 HSI agents, pretending to be Hopkins’ child lust interest, asked Hopkins to show up at a high school’s tennis courts. At 9:43PM, he did! Agents arrested Hopkins.
Hopkins took his case all the way to trial… but lost. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison with 5 years supervised release.
